What is Canesten Thrush External Cream 2% w/w Cream Clotrimazole?

Canesten Thrush External Cream relieves irritation of the vulva (vulvitis) which is caused by vaginal thrush (candidiasis). Although this cream provides relief from the external irritation caused by vaginal thrush, it cannot treat any internal (vaginal) cause of the infection.

How to use this product

Always use this cream exactly as described in the patient information leaflet or as your doctor / Chemist4U pharmacist has told you. Before use, pierce the tube seal by inverting the cap over the end of the tube and press. To treat the itching and soreness of the vulva, the cream should be thinly and evenly applied to the area around the entrance of the vagina, 2 or 3 times a day and smoothed in gently. A product to treat the internal (vaginal) infection should be used at the same time. For external use only.

How does clotrimazole work to treat thrush?

The active ingredient in Canesten Thrush External Cream is clotrimazole. Clotrimazole belongs to a group of medicines called azoles and is an antifungal agent which fights the cause of infections such as vaginal thrush.

What causes thrush in women?

Thrush is a yeast infection – as the vagina naturally produces yeast, certain things may cause it to produce too much, resulting in thrush.

It’s not a sign of bad hygiene, and women are more likely to develop thrush if they’re sexually active, are taking antibiotics, are pregnant, have a weakened immune system or poorly managed diabetes.

The symptoms for female thrush include itching and soreness in the vagina, discharge which is usually odourless but may resemble cottage cheese, and pain during sex or urination.

Is Canesten Thrush External Cream suitable for pregnant and breastfeeding women?

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, you must ask your doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist for advice before using any new products.

When should this product not be used?

Canesten Thrush External Cream may be unsuitable for certain people. Do not use this cream if you are allergic to clotrimazole, cetostearyl alcohol, benzyl alcohol or any of the other listed ingredients. Talk to your doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist before taking this medicine if you have any of the following:

• You are unsure whether you have thrush or this is the first time you have had these symptoms.
• You have had more than two infections of thrush in the last six months.
• You or your partner have ever had a sexually transmitted disease.
• You are aged under 16 or over 60.
• You have any of the following symptoms:  irregular vaginal bleeding, abnormal vaginal bleeding or a blood stained discharge. Ulcers, blisters or sores of the vagina or vulva. Lower abdominal pain. Pain or difficulty in passing urine. Fever or chills.  Feeling sick or vomiting. Diarrhoea. A foul smelling discharge from the vagina.

Are there any side effects?

Like all products, Canesten Thrush External Cream may cause side effects in some people, but these won’t affect everybody. Seek emergency medical attention if you notice any signs of a severe allergic reaction, symptoms of which include swelling of the face and throat, skin rash, breathing difficulties and/or loss of consciousness.

Storage information

Store in a cool, dry place out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date, referring to the last day of the month stated on the packaging. Do not throw away any medicines via wastewater or household waste.
